Thanks to tom and bluesky for alerting me to these great games!
this awesome website helps you learn new vocab words. for every word you correctly guess the meaning of, it will donate 20 grains of rice to the UN World Food Program. try it, it's fun!
EasyDonations attempts to find ways to give to charity without costing you any effort. (they even have a page about search engines for charity!) the site tries to go beyond the click-to-donate trend and find other ways that are even easier. check it out!
i just found this site committed to bringing charitable opportunities to a manageable level. it gives suggestions for how to make a difference in 15 minutes, a few hours, or on vacation. these inspiring, flexible ideas might just change the world, even in a very small way. check it out!
ever been stumped for a gift? maybe you're shopping for an upcoming birthday, anniversary, wedding, or other holiday. or maybe you are trying to make your own list and you're thinking you have too much stuff already -- like you need more gift cards for places you never shop, things you never use, or knick-knacks... what do they do, anyway? i mean, those things all have their place... but what if you want something... more?
if you find yourself in such a predicament, fear not! Oxfam has the solution with Oxfam Unwrapped. you or your loved ones can choose from a wide selection of gifts to fight poverty and suffering worldwide. sounds "funusual", right? (FAQ)
these gifts support various strategies to fight poverty and suffering: economics, clean water and sanitation, education, health treatment and prevention, humanitarian and emergency work, and other such campaigning work. check out the interactive map to see specific areas of improvement.
you can sort by price or subject, or just browse around for whatever looks interesting. whatever you choose, you'll have the peace of mind that you are making the world a better place.
SearchKindly.org is another charity-supporting search engine, this one powered by Google. SearchKindly donates all advertising revenue toward a charity (one that is voted on each month -- you don't get to pick like GoodSearch). each search turns up about 1/3 of a penny. check it out!
a search engine... and a charity... at the same time? could it be possible? GoodSearch.com proposes to do just that. just pick a charity that's been registered with the site, conduct your web searches as you normally do (it's powered by yahoo!), and you can earn money for charities and schools! each click approximates to $0.01 for your charity (as long as you're not cheating!!). the money is generated the same way as the hunger site -- advertisers! half of the revenue generated goes to charities. read more at the faq.
google is my homepage and my favorite search engine. according to my search history, i've made 472 searches in the past month. wow! i'm going to commit to changing my homepage to GoodSearch.com for at least one month. if i like it, i'll stick to it. i propose the same challenge to you. just try it out for one month -- that's all!
national crochet month is pretty much over :*( but i'll probably keep posting crochet stuff. pictures will come soon, i promise! but i'll be without internet connection until after easter -- going on vacation! woo-hoo! i'm doing some service project stuff in virginia. should be good times.
so here's my april challenge for you: change your homepage to GoodSearch.com. recommend it to your friends. use those pennies to make a difference.
march is national crochet month! yes, i know you've all been waiting eagerly all year for it. it has arrived! yay!!
i encourage anyone who has not learned crochet to learn this month. if you are already an avid crocheter, i encourage you to learn a new pattern or technique.
the reason i especially wish to highlight national crochet month this year is because i hope it will be a good excuse to get people excited about using their own resources to help those in need. think about it: yarn is fairly cheap, crocheting is a fun stress-reliever, doesn't take much time (if you scrape together some free time each day, say ten minutes, you can do more than you think), and will give you a great sense of accomplishment. and even better, you'll have the warm fuzzy knowledge of helping someone else in need.
there's my rant... need more convincing? i thought not! :-P
here's a great page of crochet charity links -- there are tons more if you google! you might find a local cause to donate to as well.
and if crochet's not your thing, find another hobby to use charitably. be creative! have fun!
happy national crochet month!
just stumbled on this site: toyboxcharity.org. it has some pretty cool stuff about street children in latin america. check it out and let me know what you think!
